King Abdulaziz: The Early Years

King Abdulaziz was born in Riyadh, then the capital of the Second Saudi State, on January 4, 1877.

He was nurtured by his father, Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal and his mother, Princess Sarah Bint Ahmed al-Sudairi. His early schooling was in reading, writing, Quran recitation, Islamic sciences and Arabic. He also learnt horse riding and gained equestrian talents.

Abdulaziz grew up in a time when the region was undergoing political changes and fighting over its leadership. He began participating in delegations led by his father even before he was fifteen. These early experiences helped to fit him for his subsequent career.

Kuwait Years

Abdulaziz and his family moved to Kuwait due to the political upheavals in the area. This period became a significant aspect of his early life.

During his time in Kuwait, he further developed his leadership skills and remained abreast of the political environment in the Arabian Peninsula. He later started preparations for the attempt to reinstate Al Saud sovereignty in Riyadh.

His journey back towards Riyadh would be the start of a far wider drive to unify the kingdom.

The Recapture of Riyadh, 1902

The recapture of Riyadh was one of the most significant moments in the life of King Abdulaziz.

In 1902 Abdulaziz and his followers recaptured Riyadh and reestablished Al Saud authority. He entered Al-Masmak Palace and proclaimed the restoration of Al Saud power.

Abdulaziz began repairing the fortifications of Riyadh after the victory. His father, Imam Abdulrahman, arrived later from Kuwait. Abdulaziz was first offered the emirate to his father but subsequently took charge with his father’s oversight and direction.

In 1902 Abdulaziz gained power in a public ceremony. Thus began a protracted process of unification.
