The Art of Arabic Coffee (Gahwa)

Hospitality sits at the very heart of Saudi culture. Locals will often welcome you with traditional Arabic coffee, known as Gahwa. A host pours this cardamom-spiced brew from a brass Dallah directly into a small, handleless Finjan cup.

Always accept and hold the cup with your right hand. Using your left hand offends people in Arab culture. Hosts serve the coffee unsweetened alongside fresh, sweet dates. Accept the first cup to show respect for your generous host. Gently shake your empty cup side-to-side when you finish. This subtle wrist shake tells the host you decline a refill.
