US Patent for Mechanical Heart Valve Awarded to King Saud University
King Saud University has won a US patent for a three-leaflet mechanical heart valve designed by Dr. Rakan bin Ibrahim Nazer, professor of cardiac sciences at the university’s College of Medicine.
The Saudi Press Agency said the design has three movable leaflets connected to a central mechanism and a ring around it. Its design allows the leaflets to open and close in a coordinated manner, regulating the flow of blood and reducing the backwards flow of blood.
The development aims to improve the movement of the valve components and the flow of blood compared to existing mechanical heart valve designs.
The patent is another milestone in the university’s attempts to innovate and do medical research. It is also a step advance in the development of mechanical heart valve technology.
