Tracing the Historic Legacy of Zamzam Water Carriers
Saudi Arabia modernizes Hajj's oldest profession to ensure maximum water quality.
A Deep Historical Root
Providing Zamzam water to pilgrims represents one of the oldest Hajj professions. The Prophet Muhammad’s grandfather originally dug the Zamzam Well. He later passed this vital duty down to his son Al-Abbas.
Traditional Water Distribution
Historically, water carriers stored the fresh water in large earthenware jars. They fumigated these jars with mastic and Taif rosewater for aroma. Workers distributed the water via portable jugs inside the holy mosques. They also coordinated deliveries directly to pilgrim accommodations.
Modernizing a Humanitarian Legacy
Saudi Arabia formalized this historic trade into a regulated system long ago. King Abdulaziz Foundation documents trace these management regulations back to 1345 AH. Today, the government utilizes automated bottling plants and digital distribution networks. These high-tech systems maintain maximum quality control for all visiting pilgrims.
