Saudi Arabia Demands Urgent Protection For Seafarers In The Strait Of Hormuz

Strait of Hormuz

Highlighting A Humanitarian Crisis

Saudi Arabia continues to advocate for international maritime safety. The Kingdom recently highlighted the severe humanitarian situation in the Strait of Hormuz. Stranded seafarers currently face terrible living conditions in this vital waterway. Their fundamental human rights remain at significant risk due to regional instability. Ambassador Abdulmohsen bin Khothaila delivered a crucial joint statement in Geneva. He spoke on behalf of multiple nations at the 63rd Human Rights Council session. The ambassador expressed deep international concern over the ongoing maritime insecurity.

Protecting Innocent Civilian Workers

Recent attacks on civilian vessels have directly harmed innocent crew members. Many seafarers now struggle to access basic, life-saving necessities. They desperately need food, drinking water, fuel, and vital medical care. The ambassador cited Human Rights Council Resolution 56/18 in his speech. This resolution officially recognizes seafarers as a highly vulnerable worker category. It affirms they hold no responsibility for the geopolitical conflicts surrounding them. International law demands the strict protection of their lives, health, and dignity.

Enforcing International Maritime Law

Saudi Arabia praised recent humanitarian initiatives by Gulf Cooperation Council countries. GCC port authorities have conducted vital search and rescue operations. They successfully provided essential supplies and facilitated emergency crew changes. Secure maritime navigation relies entirely on the safety of these maritime workers. The Kingdom urges all states to protect seafarers in the Strait. They must uphold the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Protecting commercial vessels remains crucial for global economic stability.
