Jazan University Drives Scientific Innovation In Saudi Coffee Cultivation
Transforming Regional Agriculture
Coffee cultivation in the mountain highlands of the Jazan Region is transforming rapidly. Knowledge and scientific innovation drive this significant agricultural shift. Jazan University stands at the absolute forefront of this vital research. They develop new varieties and train local farmers to advance production. The university recently registered four distinct plant patents for innovative Saudi coffee varieties. Researchers named the new varieties Jazan Light, Jazan Premium, Jazan Mocha, and JU2030. These scientific outputs open broader avenues for studying national plant resources. Fostering innovation in coffee cultivation supports the economic goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
Monitoring Biodiversity And Genetics
The university's Environmental and Nature Research Center monitors local biodiversity closely. They track more than 70 local and international coffee strains currently. The government provided over SAR 6.8 million in dedicated research funding. This funding covers irrigation, fertilization, and complex genetic resource mapping. Scientists also focus heavily on selecting highly disease-resistant plant varieties. These extensive efforts have produced 35 peer-reviewed scientific papers. Researchers also published three specialized coffee cultivation manuals for public use. The university established a dedicated coffee research and technology laboratory on campus.
Partnering With Local Farmers
Educators organized 10 workshops and nine field courses for the community. They transferred modern cultivation methods directly to the local farmers. Jazan University formed strategic partnerships with the Saudi Coffee Company recently. They develop joint research and support seedling production to stimulate innovation. The university also organized the Jazan International Conference on Coffee Research. This event brought researchers and stakeholders together to discuss production sustainability. They actively addressed the modern climate challenges facing local coffee farmers today. Find out how the Kingdom is developing its agricultural sector.
