Celestial Conjunction Signals The Start Of Traditional Al-Wasm Season

Moon Pleiades conjunction

Tracking Seasonal Changes

The skies over Saudi Arabia showcased a beautiful astronomical event yesterday. Residents witnessed a close apparent conjunction of the Moon and the Pleiades. Arab folk tradition refers to this specific celestial alignment as “Qiran 19.” Bedouins and farmers historically used this marker to track seasonal changes. It signals the beginning of the highly anticipated Al-Wasm season. The first phase of this season is traditionally known as Wasm Al-Harif. Astronomy Club member Mohammed Al-Hazimi explained the significance of the event. He noted the conjunction signals a gradual transition toward much cooler weather.

Preparing For Desert Rainfall

Traditional observations associate this period with rain-bearing clouds developing from the west. The entire Al-Wasm season lasts for approximately 81 days in total. The initial Wasm Al-Harif phase lasts for about 27 days. Rainfall during this time benefits the germination of spring desert vegetation. It prepares the arid soil for the growth of local desert truffles. Historically, Arabs relied on lunar mansions and stellar positions for survival. These indicators helped them time their agriculture and animal grazing perfectly. Preserving this traditional astronomical knowledge honors the rich heritage of the Arabian Peninsula.
